Lunch under the lemon tree

A backyard table, a few dishes passed around, and the easy rhythm of an afternoon with nowhere else to be.

A sunny garden table set with lunch dishes, citrus, and flowers

The table was not planned very far in advance. A couple of messages in the morning turned into lunch outside, with extra chairs pulled over from the garage and whatever was ready in the kitchen.

Someone cut lemons from the tree. Someone else found a vase for the flowers. By the time we sat down, the table looked more thoughtful than any of us had intended.

The part worth repeating

I keep thinking about how little it takes to make an ordinary afternoon feel distinct. Good food helps. Sunlight helps. Mostly, it is the decision to stay at the table a little longer.

We should do that more often.
